Pope meets with Hungarian PM, Portuguese President

Pope Leo received in audience this morning António José Martins Seguro, President of Portugal, and Péter Magyar, the Prime Minister of Hungary.

Both leaders subsequently met with Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, Holy See Secretary for Relations with States and International Organizations.

Meeting with President Seguro

In a statement following the Pope’s meeting with Seguro, the Holy See Press Office said that “satisfaction was expressed for the solid relations between the Holy See and Portugal”. The talks “focused on matters of mutual interest, including socio-economic developments and the promotion of the common good”.

Finally, “several regional and international issues were addressed, with special reference to the repercussions of global conflicts, migration, the importance of multilateralism and respect for international law, as well as the urgent need to support peace”.

Following the meeting with Magyar, the Holy See Press Office said that “satisfaction was expressed for the good bilateral relations and for the contribution that the Catholic Church brings” to Hungary. The talks “focused on the Hungarian socio-economic context and on topics of mutual interest, with special reference to the educational sector and the protection of the most vulnerable Christian communities in the world.”

The Press Office added that there was “an exchange of views on current international affairs, particularly on the conflict situations in Ukraine and the Middle East, hoping for a greater commitment from the international community in promoting peace”.
