Nicaraguan Parliament introduces reform to extend presidential term

A constitutional reform has been introduced in Nicaragua’s National Assembly to extend the presidential term from five to seven years, with greater scope for renewal.

The proposal was read to the chamber by parliamentary speaker Gustavo Porras.

Managua’s position

According to the text, extending the presidential term would ensure “stability of vision, effective action and continuity” in responding to the nation’s urgent needs.

Mr. Porras told the chamber that the government “must organise itself according to the priorities and timetable established by the National Plan for Human Development and Liberation from Poverty.”

The initiative comes only a few days after a statement by President Daniel Ortega in which he suggested eliminating elections.

Approval expected in September

Co-President Rosario Murillo, Ortega’s wife, announced that parliamentary approval is expected in September.

The move prompted an immediate response from the international community.

The United States, the European Union, the United Nations and several Latin American countries expressed serious concern over what they described as a serious democratic setback.
